What Happens in a Kinesiology Session? Plus Why to Consider It in 2022

Share

Before we fully answer the question “What happens in a kinesiology session?” it’s probably worth talking about what kinesiology is first. Kinesiology can help you make healthy changes in your life. It can do this by assisting you in uncovering and overcoming certain physical challenges you may be facing right now.

Basically, it’s a treatment that helps with preventing and reducing the effects of serious health conditions, such as an injury. Also, no matter if you are as young as 12 or as mature as 90, kinesiology has no age limit in terms of helping to heal the human body.

So what is kinesiology?

Kinesiology is the study of movement. Kinesiology can treat your soft tissue injury, optimize your health through exercise, identify muscle imbalances or get you prepared for an athletic event/sport. A kinesiologist can perform strength, flexibility and special tests to determine muscle weaknesses and functional abnormalities that can contribute to your pain or condition.

By working with your current issues and symptoms, our kinesiology practitioners use muscle testing to find the underlying problem. When the issue is identified, we will use the appropriate  exercises to help your body heal itself.

Several issues that kinesiology can help with include:

  • Injuries
  • Chronic health issues (heart disease)
  • Pain relief
  • Weight loss
  • Sport performance

What Happens in a Kinesiology Session?

During your first session, we go through an assessment. We will ask you to provide us with your health history, as detailed as possible, and you tell us what you’d like to achieve during your sessions.

The kinesiologist will have you perform some basic flexibility and strength tests. For example, if you have a shoulder issue, the kinesiologist will look at your shoulder flexibility and test your shoulder strength.

After your initial assessment, your sessions may include:

  • A warm up using the treadmill or recumbent bike
  • Strength exercises
  • Core exercises
  • Stretches
  • Lifestyle discussions
  • Postural coaching
  • Ergonomic coaching
  • And much more.

The end of the session is your time to ask any questions you may have about the session, and anything else you’d like to clarify, as well as to discuss things you need to do at home to support your session and goals.

After a Kinesiology Session

After your kinesiology session you might feel relief at the area that was causing you pain. For example, if you were attending kinesiology because of low back pain, you might notice that your low back pain is lessened. You may feel like the muscles you strengthened during the session are tired.

It’s important to replenish your fluids and hydrate, drinking water will help after a session.

How Many Kinesiology Sessions Will I Need?

It will take multiple sessions to see improvement in your pain, strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness. Since kinesiology is personalized to suit your treatment goals, the number of sessions needed will be determined to what those goals are, and it may change over time.

Positive changes happen with consistent sessions focused on your individual goal. As with all health treatments, kinesiology is no quick fix or a magic trick to obtain fast results.

What Else Can I Expect?

Personal training may be recommended during your customized kinesiology program. This type of training lets you decide your schedule, set your fitness goals with your kinesiologist guiding you in exercises, help you be accountable, and reach your goals.
